Poor power pesters south City

PDD fails uninterrupted supplies, residents threaten roadside protests

Srinagar, July 20: Amid scorching heat in the ongoing summer, the Power Development Department (PDD) is resorting to frequent power cuts in the south City areas drawing severe criticism from the locals who threatened to stage protests against the government.
In the south City areas like Chana Pora, Rawal Pora, Pir Bagh, Humhama and Hyderpora  the power cuts have been frequent for the past few weeks, the residents said.
The residents of Humhama said the power remains off for around four to five hours in day while the residents of Chana Pora said the area witnesses around half-a-dozen cuts a day, each lasting for around an hour.
“This is the height of arrogance on the part of the government that it has been so callous towards the power supplies even during the Holy month of Ramazan,” said a delegation of locals from Chana Pora.
The residents of Humhama said they were finding it inconvenient to live without fans in this scorching heat. “Perhaps the PDD Babus don’t know that fans don’t operate in the absence of electricity and not all are rich enough to have access to invertors,” said a resident of Humhama.
The pesky power cuts have come at a time when the administration had assured of uninterrupted power supply during the holy month.
“Basically the problem is that there’s no accountability in this government because of which people are facing worst of the problems on every front,” said a resident of Afindi Bagh Rawal Pora adding that the area was facing worst of the cuts.
The areas, which are facing power cuts in the south City, have been metered for years. The government had assured uninterrupted power supply to such areas. But during the past three-four years of the ruling coalition regime, the government failed to keep the promise of uninterrupted power supplies to the metered areas.
When contacted a senior PDD official said the supply was being cut “to avoid overload on the system.” He, however, refuted that there were “any long power cuts”.
“Load shedding has to be done through distress cuts,” the official said adding the cuts last only for one to two hours, in aggregate.
Meanwhile the residents have threatened to stage roadside protests against the government should the PDD fail to improve the supplies immediately.
