From north to east, Achan stench furthers

After Shaher-e-Khaas, nauseating smell invades Lal Bazar; Srinagarites pestered; Admin sleeps

GK CITY CORRESPONDENT

Srinagar, July 21: Despite repeated public appeals to the government top brass –seeking end to the foul smell emanating from Achan dumping yard –the stench has been furthering with each passing day –even as more and more areas are falling prey to the nauseating air.
For the past over a month, people have been complaining that the stench emanating from Achan dumping yard, in Saida Pora area of north City, has been on rise making their lives miserable.

The invasion
Till a few months back, the dumping yard stench would remain confined to the Achan neighborhood. But since June 2013, people have been complaining of the worst.
The stench has not only risen to nauseating levels in areas like Eidgah, Saidapora, Wanganpora and Khushaalsar, its expanse has grown manifold particularly towards the  heart of the old City and the eastern stretch around Lal Bazar.

Nauseating timings
The locals have been complaining that the stench swells by around 3:00 PM and worsens by sundown. The affected areas include Hawal, Zadibal, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Noor Bagh, Khanyar, Rainawari. The new entrants in the list of complainants include Lal Bazar, Madin Sahib and NowShehra.
The stench has gone so high that the inhabitants of these areas often complain of health problems like nausea and headache. “My children have been vomiting frequently for the past many days while I myself suffer from acute headache,” complained Shafika Begum, a woman from Lal Bazar area.
A leading medico said his migraine has worsened because of the stench. “I am unable to work properly because of frequent migraine, which is caused by nothing but stench. The health problems being faced by others can only be imagined,” the medico lamented.

Ramazan issue
The stench has brought more of worries for the people in the ongoing month of Ramazan when most of the people in this Muslim dominated society observe fast from dawn to dusk. “As Iftaar time approaches, the stench rises and one feels nauseating,” said a resident of Nowhatta.
Many said they tried to get rid of the stench by igniting essence-sticks, locally known as Agarbatti.  “We exhaust over a box of AgarBatti everyday but it fails to bring any respite,” said Muhammad Shafi, a government employee from Lal Bazar area.

The slumber
From public circles to religious scholars to experts to political parties, many have expressed concern over the growing stench. But the ruling National Conference led government looks unmoved.
From minister for urban development, Nawang Rigzin Jora to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Shailendra Kumar to District Development Commissioner Shailendra Kumar to Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr GN Qasba, the pestered people have been appealing to many in the government top brass. But respite is awaited amid the growing stench.
In the latest, the Imam of Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta had condemned the government failure to get rid of the stench while the health experts fear outbreak of deadly epidemic.
As about the ruling coalition government’s rival, the Peoples Democratic Party it has accused the NC of being responsible for the stench. The PDP spokesman Naeem Akhter alleges that some politicians in the ruling coalition have huge land holdings on stake in the Achan dumping  site neighborhood and “so want the stench to further so that people get fed up and seek shifting of the dumping site.”

Land mafia angle
For the past few years, some “land mafia” eyeing to built residential colony in the area, has often been accused of brining hurdles in the smooth operations at the Achan dumping yard, where garbage collected from the entire City is dumped.

The Govt plea
The state government has been pleading that the garbage dumping is being undertaken in a scientific manner and “so there’s nothing to worry”. But then what’s fuelling stench, which is invading the City, more nauseatingly, with each passing day?  (TO BE CONCLUDED)
