Unsafe outside Kashmir

Parents of youth studying and working outside Kashmir are worried about their safety

After some recent incidents of alleged harassment of Kashmiri youth in various states, parents here are worried about their wards who are studying outside Kashmir and working in different states. Some parents are now insisting their wards to return home, given the fears of harassment and a sense of insecurity outside the state.
Rafiqa, a resident of downtown, is concerned about the safety of her son who is working in Bhopal. She remains concerned about her son who is doing business in Bhopal. “I am very concerned for him, keeping in view past incidents when Kashmiris working outside were either killed or arrested,” she says.
Earlier, Rafiqa’s son Bilal was doing his business in Kashmir. After setting up his business, he realized that his business was not coming up to his expectations in Kashmir. His projected profits were less than what he expected from his business. “When all of us used to have dinner, he used to tell us that he wants to go outside Kashmir where he can do what he wants to,” she says. “He always used to say, ‘Mummy yette chunne kiheen’.”
After some time Bilal’s parents finally allowed him to go to Bhopal to setup his business. “We allowed him to go there and set up his business and after a month he called me and he was happy,” she recalls. “He told me that his business was going good and he is happy that he decided to leave Kashmir.”
Sister of Parvez Ahmad Teli from Nawab Bazar who recently died under mysterious circumstances in Mumbai still remembers the day when his brother left home for Goa. “He was working as a salesman in Bangalore,” says Farida. His family always worried about him and always insisted him to leave this job and come back to Kashmir. “We always used to tell him that why don't you come back home and start some business of your own. It is not safe to be there,” she  recalls telling him.“Su oas asse dille te door te aechan te door,” Farida says. “Now we are helpless. He left us mid-way”
Meanwhile, Bilal has now spent almost five years in Bhopal. He is doing well in his business. But Rafiqa often worries about his safety. “He used to call us once in two days but from the day when two boys from Nawab Bazar and Ganderbal were killed, I have started calling him every day,” she says. “I am really worried for him.”
