THE EDITOR RECOMMENDS
WEBSITE OF THE WEEK
http://www.the-tls.co.uk/tls/
‘’The TLS is the only literary weekly – in fact the only journal – to offer comprehensive coverage not just of the latest and most important publications, in every subject, in several languages – but also current theatre, opera, exhibitions and film. The TLS’s authority is acknowledged world-wide and its approach is world-wide, too. In all areas, the TLS, as a writer in Le Monde put it, “has no rivals”. You may, like Noam Chomsky, find it “provocative, stimulating, irritating, informative”. But if you care about the life of the mind, you will certainly find it indispensable.’’
FILM OF THE WEEK
The Battle of Algiers
“The Battle of Algiers is a 1966 war film based on occurrences during the Algerian War (1954–62) against The French Government in North Africa, the most prominent being the titular Battle of Algiers. It was directed by Gillo Pontecorvo. The film has been critically celebrated and often taken, by insurgent groups and states alike, as an important commentary on urban guerilla warfare. It occupies the 120th place on Empire Magazine's list of the 500 greatest movies of all time.”

‘The Undivided Past’, by David Cannadine
By Mark Mazower
“The truth of the matter is that historians are members of their society – or societies – and their writings form part of the larger conversations that take place around them. They may talk primarily to one another but even then they are also responding to issues of common concern. One form human society has so far not generally taken is global. There is still virtually no shared consciousness globally of common struggles or common achievements.”

On James Baldwin
By Darryl Pinckney
“There is something wild in the beauty of Baldwin’s sentences and the cool of his tone, something improbable, too, this meeting of Henry James, the Bible, and Harlem. I can see the scratches in the desk in my room where I was reading “Notes of a Native Son,” Baldwin’s memoir of his hated father’s death the day his father’s last child was born in 1943, one day before Harlem erupted into the deadliest race riot in its history. I can feel the effects of this essay within me still.”
