LA to approach BJP high command

Speaker Seeks Strict Action Against Sharma

Jammu, Mar 20: Speaker Mubarak Gul Wednesday said he would write to BJP’s central leadership for “stern action” against its state party president Jugal Kishore Sharma who made provocative gestures towards the only woman minister in J&K Government, Sakina Itoo, in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
For the second consecutive day today, the House condemned the non-parliamentary behavior of the BJP state president, demanding action against him.
On Tuesday Sharma was seen making provocative gestures towards Sakina who is a National Conference legislator. In an aggressive posturing, Sharma shouted at Sakina, attempted to throw papers at her and go nearer to her. He was suspended for the remaining session by the Speaker.
As the House assembled this morning, the woman legislators stood up demanding stern action against Sharma.
“It was a criminal act which has created fear psychosis among women folk. We want justice and want the House to take action,” said legislator Indu Pawar.
National Conference’s Shameema Firdous said legislators make laws for protection of women but it was unfortunate that Sharma heckled a woman member.
“He did it in the House. We can only imagine how he will be treating women and children at home,” said Shameema. She demanded that the Speaker should take up the matter with BJP women’s wing leader Sushma Sawraj.
Another woman legislator Bimla Luthra said BJP should oust Sharma from the party for this act.
In response, the Speaker said he has never heard about “such an indecent act” by any member in the State Legislature.
“I, as the presiding officer of this House, apologize for this act by the (BJP) member,” the Speaker said.
Condemning the act, he said he would take up the matter with BJP leader Sushma Sawraj and ask for stern action against Sharma.
Besides, he said he would see to it that action under law was taken against Sharma in the House.
At this juncture, Independent legislator Er Rashid intervened: “I condemn the act by the BJP member. But the House has never uttered a word when hundreds of women were molested by the security forces in Kashmir.” Rashid created uproar to register his protest.
