No threat to UPA Govt:Azad

GKNN/PTI

Jammu,Mar 20: In the backdrop of DMK withdrawing support to the UPA government over Sri Lankan Tamils issue, Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said there is no threat to the government.
“The government has full majority. There is no threat to UPA government. We have the numbers. We have other supporters which are supporting UPA from outside, besides those who are part of UPA except DMK,” Azad told reporters here. The Minister, on a day-long visit to Udhampur-Doda belt of Jammu region, said, “Parliamentary elections will be held on time.”
Azad, along with Defence Minister AK Antony and Finance Minister P Chidambaram, had met Karunanidhi on March 18 after the DMK supremo had threatened to pull out of the alliance.
"We were not expecting that DMK will withdraw support. We were with them till late in the night. We talked for over two and a half hours," Azad said.
"They raised demand of moving amendments to the US-sponsored resolution on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue at the UNHRC. We had told them that we will reach Delhi and talk to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister," he said.
"We thought they will wait for one or two days. If they had waited, it would have been better," he said.
DMK withdrew support to the UPA Tuesday and the party's five Union ministers today submitted their resignation to the Prime Minister.
After inspecting super-specialty camp in Udhampur district hospital, Azad flew to Doda to inaugurate district hospital complex.
The nine-day camp in Udhampur hospital, which started from March 16, was organised by Health Ministry, State Health department and Rotary Club.
Patients from Jammu province are visiting the camp and over 20,000 patients have so far been treated at the camp free of cost.
Addressing a public gathering after inaugurating new IPD block in Doda, Azad said that liberal funding is being provided to Jammu and Kashmir by the Union government.
J&K R&B Minister Abdul Majid Wani while addressing the gathering reiterated the commitment of the coalition government to improve roads in the state. He said Doda being among the least connected districts, urgent need was felt to bring it at par with rest of the well-connected districts and as such special attention was being paid in this direction.
J&K Minister of State for Health, Shabir Ahmed Khan, highlighted the steps taken by the government to improve health infrastructure in the state.
J&K Minister of State for Power and Technical Education, Vikar Rasool Wani, announced that 400 candidates from each constituency of the erstwhile District Doda will be sent outside state for skill development in various trades for absorption in private sector. He said new trades are also being started in ITIs of the district to provide better technical education to youth in the region.
MP Lal Singh, MLC Naresh Gupta and MLC Shyam Lal Bhagat also spoke on the occasion.
