Remembering Shamim

Today we remember someone we never can forget

TRIBUTE

ADVOCATE S. M IQBAL

Shameem Ahmad Shameem was one of the  great personalities  of our state, who in the prime of his youth left an indelible  impact on Kashmiri politics and other intellectual spheres.
He was  a prolific writer, essayist, critic, an astute politician, a philanthropist  and a visionary. He quit just at 45 on the Ist  May, 1980.  At this age, very  few  people achieve such remarkable feats which  he achieved.
A prominent  newspaper on 2nd May, 1980  while printing the sad news of his death wrote  the headline as,  “ Kashmir’s  soil will never  produce another son like Shameem  Ahmad Shameem ”
Shameem  had extraordinary  oratory  skills. His speeches  were intimate,  full of wisdom and humour. Same was the  case with his  writings . His writings would attract a reader. He  blended reality and sarcasm perfectly and  his tone never sounded didactic  but always struck a chord with the common masses. His writings still feel fresh and relevant and are worth  reading for  laymen as well as intellectuals  and politically  conscious  persons. His style of writing is  unique and his essays were  based on facts and  cogent arguments. He had a great knack of  convincing  and motivating  people both with his  speeches  and his writing. Some  kind  of mysterious  charm always could be felt by  his audience  and readers.
In 1978, when Shopian  district agitation was  going on , Late Abdul Ghani Lone came  to Shopian on invitation  of all parties action committee. Lone was himself  fearless and a great orator, but  here he said, “ Shopianites  are used to the magical  speeches  of Shameem Ahmad Shameem, I am afraid to speak infront  of  you, just like a patient who has been treated  by the highly  expert doctor with highest antibiotics,  “will not be satisfied with an average doctor”.
Shameem was valiant, outspoken and  a realist man. He believed in speaking truth, even  in hard times and unfavorable  conditions.  Once he was asked, why he criticized  Sheikh Abdullah so brazenly  in his newspaper  “ Aaina” if he would have given  you another mandate for the parliament, would  you have still critized  him ? In response, Shameem Ahmad Shameem , gave an eloquent reply  and wrote a full article on it, in which he  argued, “ The world of politics depends upon” “ if”,  ‘if’, the Maharaja of Kashmir would not have  transferred Sheik  M.  Abdullah to Ladakh, his ego  would not have been hurt and he would not  have  rebelled  against him. “if”  General Ayoub Khan  would not have  placed Zulfiqar Ali Butto in his  Cabinet, Gen. Ayoub Khan would not have been  displaced from his position  later on. And if  Bhutto  wouldn’t  had appointed  Gen. Zial-Ul- Haq  as army Chief , then Bhutto wouldn’t  have been killed”. Based on this “if”, Shameem Ahmad Shameem  wrote a beautiful,  intelligent and blunt essay.
Once in Indian parliament, Shameem Ahmad Shameem  was blaming the Indian government for rigging the  Kashmiri elections  and  criticized  the Kashmir elections  as being unfair. A  BJP member rose and said to  Shameem that at least you should not accuse  us for not carrying out fair election in Kashmir,  because  you have  won as an independent Candidate , defeating the Ex – CM  of  J & K”. Shameem  was  quick. He instantly gave such a reply which  aroused  a roar of laughter among all and silenced that BJP member. He said, “ Sir”, if a plane  crashed, and some persons escaped  miraculously  unharmed,  would you deny that  plane has crashed ?”
Shameem Ahmad Shameem  was deeply attached  to Shopian. He spent his childhood here, had his primary  education  from here and in Shopian he become  active  in politics and in 1967 Assembly  elections. He won  with a huge margin  as an independent  candidate.  In his last days at U.S.A, in a letter to me, he wrote “ I feel proud that I am a Kashmiri and belong to  Shopian”
May his soul rest in peace.
