Amid public outrage,Qazi Yasir defends fake ‘faith-healer’

Islamabad (Anantnag), May 28: Asserting that the arrest of fake faith-healer from Budgam Gulzar Ahmad Bhat, who has been charged with raping minor girls at his ‘seminary’, can be a “conspiracy to keep children away from religious institutions (Madarssas),” Umat-I-Islami Chairman and Mirwaiz South Kashmir Qazi Ahmad Yasir Tuesday came out in defense of the alleged rapist saying “(Gulzar) is innocent till charges are proved against him.”
“I am not at all defending Gulzar Ahmad but since the incident has maligned the image of all religious institutions, this could well be a conspiracy to keep our children away from religious institutions (Madarssas),” said Qazi Yasir while addressing a press conference here. Yasir said every person is innocent till proven guilty “and so is Gulzar.”
“We don’t have an iota of trust on police as it is the same police which has hushed up the 2006 sex scandal, Shopian double rape and murder and Kunan Poshpora incidents,” said Yasir. Asked how come Gulzar ran a “seminary” for decades despite being an illiterate and who funded him, Yasir said “an independent probe committee of various religious organizations including Mutahida Ulami Ahlesunnat (MUA) and Jamat-I-Islami be constituted to bring the truth to fore.”
Yasir asked the people not to associate the incident with a particular sect.
“An impression is being given that Gulzar was associated with a particular sect. But let me make it clear that this can be an individual act and can in no way be associated with a particular sect,” said Yasir. He alleged the incident can also be “a ploy to create a wedge between different sects.” Yasir also accused police of  “harassing the followers of Gulzar Ahmad Bhat.”
“Thousands of people  followed Gulzar blindly but police is now harassing them,” said Yasir.
