WHO IS SANAULLAH
Jammu, May 3: Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Haq, who is battling for his life after a gruesome attack on him by a jail inmate here, is said to be a known figure in the high security Kot Balwal Jail, where he has spent most of his time during the past 17 years of imprisonment.
A resident of Dallowali near Sialkot in Pakistan, the 52-year-old man was one of the “ideal and most peaceful jail inmates” at Kot Balwal and was part of ‘piper band’ of the Jammu and Kashmir Prison Department.
Having crossed illegally to this side of border, the Pakistan resident was arrested by police about 17 years ago and booked for bombing a bus in 1994 near Jammu in which 10 people were killed. He was sentenced to life and had been imprisoned in Kot Balwal Jail.
An illiterate, Sannaullah, used to eke out his living by operating a horse cart (tonga) before he entered into Jammu and Kashmir illegally. He was also said to be the “mastermind” behind the digging of a tunnel in Kot Balwal jail when the prison authorities had separated Pakistani prisoners from other inmates.
After the plan was unearthed, the Pakistani convicts and other inmates were kept together to prevent any further plot to escape.
“He had been serving twin life terms and was under trial in six other cases,” official sources said, adding that cases under Sections 302, 304, 494 of the RPC and other under various sections of POTA and TADA were also pending against him.
“In around six cases, trial is still on,” official sources informed.
