Jammu, Sept 7: Although the overall literacy rate in Jammu and Kashmir has increased during the past five decades, the gender gap in literacy has widened over these years except for the year 2011, which witnessed a slight improvement in women education.
The gender gap in literacy, which was 12.71% as per 1961 census, was at 23.60% in the 2001 census. However, as per the figures of the 2011 census, this gap has narrowed to 20.25%.
While, the census figures of 2011 suggest a slight improvement in women literacy in the state, but the gender gap in the state is still far high than the national average of 16.68%.
The 2011 census assessed the overall literacy rate at 68.74% but the gap in literacy between   men and women continues to persist. Out of the total literacy rate of 68.74%, the state has 58.01% women, who meet the literacy criteria against 78.26% men.
As per the census 1961, the gender gap in literacy was 12.71%, which widened to 17.47% till 1971 and further widened to 20.41% till 1981. During the year 2001, it widened further to 23.60%. However, the survey in the census year 2011 recorded some improvement with the gap narrowing to 20.25%.
The literacy rate among males in 1961 was 16.97%, while among women it was 4.26%. In 1971, the literacy rate among males was 26.75%, while among women the rate was 9.28%. In the year 1981, the literacy among the men increased to 36.29% while in women it was recorded at 15.88%.
Similarly, in the year 2001, the literacy rate among males was 66.60%, while in females it was 43%.  The figures during all these years suggest that although the literacy rate among both males and females increased but the gender gap did not show any considerable improvement.
