New Kashmir Fruit Growers Association will construct 5000 metric ton controlled atmospheric (CA) store for preservation of fruits with an estimate cost of Rs 26 crore, borne by the fruit dealers union itself.

An official of the Horticulture Department said that the government has provided land measuring 7 kanals, 7 marlas for construction of CA store at Parimpora fruit marketing complex.

“In this regard, memorandum of understanding was signed between the Horticulture Department and New Kashmir Fruit Growers Association last week,” he said adding that “apart from leasing out land, all the expenditure will be borne by the fruit dealers cum growers union themselves for establishing the CA store.”

The memorandum of understanding in this behalf by and between Director Horticulture, Planning and Marketing, Manzoor Ahmad Qadri and president of the New Kashmir Fruit Growers Association Bashir Ahmad Basheer was signed on December 23.

“It is one of its first kind of initiative where any union or association instead of waiting for government funds, has taken a step to develop facility for their common use,” he said adding that “it would help growers to preserve fruits mostly apples for longer period and increase their revenue.”

President, New Kashmir Fruit Growers Association, Bashir Ahmad Basheer confirmed that they are going to start work on construction of CA store soon.

“We have been waiting for signing of MoU between the Horticulture Department and our union as we needed land for this project. Now we have got land on lease, construction work on the CA store will start in the next month,” Basheer said.

“Apart from subsidy, we are going to bear all the expenditure for construction of CA store,” he said adding that “this project was in pipeline for last four years for want to land.”

“Fruit dealers and growers will contribute the cost of the project from their pockets as the project will be beneficial for all growers cum dealer’s community,” Basheer said.

“It will be a game changer for local growers who could now store their produce and sell it when they would get good rates,” he added.

He said that in absence of CA/cold stores, fruit growers have to sell their produce at nominal rates as at the time of harvesting of apples, outside markets are flooded with apples which mean lesser returns for them. But now they could sell their produce at appropriate time.
