Shutdown is being observed today by the Muslims in Bhadarwah, Ramban and Kishtwar regions of Chenab valley to demand speedy trial in Kathua rape-and-murder case.

The shutdown call was issued by Majlis-e-Shoura Kishtwar and Anjuman-e-Islamia Bhadarwah as a mark of solidarity with the family of eight-year-old gangrape-and-murder victim.

The heads of both the organizations have warned both the Union and the state governments against succumbing to the pressure of communal forces.

Shops and businesses establishments owned by Muslims in Bhadarwah and Kishtwar remained closed while schools, government offices and banks functioned normally. Public and private transport was also not affected by the shutdown call.

“We have given a peaceful shutdown call to support of setting up of a fast track court and speedy trial of Rasana incident, so that the culprits are punished without any delay so that an example is set," said Pervaiz Ahmed Sheikh, President Anjuman-e-islamia Bhadarwah.

“It is unfortunate and heart wrenching to see the communal face of Jammu and Kathua Bar, who are leaving no stone unturned to shield the culprits of the inhuman act. Perhaps, this is the darkest period in the history of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

Complete shutdown is being observed in Banihal, Khari, Ramsoo, Makarkoot, Ukheral in Ramban district over Kathua rape and murder case.

Protests will be held after Friday prayers against the ghastly incident.

Schools and local transport has also been affected by the shutdown.

Eight accused have been arrested in the case.
