Chief Justice the High Court, Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed, on Sunday used water transport to inspect beautification of river Jhelum and its embankments in Srinagar areas.

The journey began from Peerzo up to Khanqah-e-Moula. He was accompanied by Justice Ali Muhammad Magray, divisional commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan, chief engineer Irrigation and Flood Control department Imtiyaz Ahmad Dhar, deputy commissioner Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Lone, managing director Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation Sarmad Hafiz, and other senior officers.

During the inspection, the CJ stopped at a few places including Polo View and Habba Kadal Ghat, and also later visited the shrine of Shah-i-Hamdan (RA).

Dhar said the Chief Justice “expressed satisfaction” over measures taken for beautification of Jhelum.

“It was a surprise inspection by the Chief Justice,” said executive engineer, I&FC department Srinagar, Sartaj Singh.

Dhar said the Jhelum beautification project was started in 2005.  He said scores of residential hutments were removed from the river embankments and rehabilitated at various places.

“The beautification of Jhelum is meant to restore the pristine glory of the river,” he said, adding that people are also “enjoying” facilities repaired or constructed under the beautification project.

On water transport facility in Srinagar, Dhar said free water transport is available for people in river Jhelum for a month. “The larger aim of this system is to decongest traffic in the summer capital and revive the centuries-old water transport system,” he said.

People can avail it free of cost up to August 15 this year, he said. “After that, very minimal amount as fare would be charged.”

Presently, the water transport facility is available from Peerzo to Chattabal Veer and back. The timing of this free service is from 10 am to 4 pm.
