Witnesses and family of a doctor who was arrested by government forces late Saturday evening in Anantnag for ferrying a militant claimed he is innocent.

A police officer speaking on condition of anonymity said Dr Ajaz Rasool of Khrewan- Kulgam, posted at Sub District Hospital Kaimoh was driving when a militant and an associate intercepted his car near Malpora on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.

“The doctor was heading towards his relatives home at Naibasti in Anantnag when a militant boarded his vehicle and asked the doctor to drop him on way. However, after travelling barely 300 meters a CRPF nakka party intercepted the vehicle,” the officer said.

As the car was stopped, the militant tried to open fire but his pistol was jammed, he said.

“The militant while trying to run lost his balance and fell down and even though he managed to escape he left the pistol there.”

The militant had left a shotgun inside the car while fleeing which was later recovered from the car of the doctor who voluntarily handed himself to the CRPF men at the check point.

A witness, who declined to be identified for fear of reprisal, said the doctor was “ruthlessly” beaten up by the CRPF men.

Dr Rasool was later taken to Mirbazar CRPF camp from where he was shifted to Kulgam SOG camp on Sunday.

"We have detained the doctor for questioning. Investigation has been set into motion," said a police officer, adding Dr Rasool is lodged at police station Qazigund now.

The family of the doctor says he didn’t know the man he had offered a lift to was a militant.

"He is innocent." A relative of the doctor said.
