‘My father’s demand for talks with Hurriyat his personal opinion’Jayant Sinha, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation

Union minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha—the son of former external affairs minister Yashwant Sinha—on Thursday termed as “personal opinion” his father’s demand of holding formal talks with Hurriyat leaders in Kashmir.  He said that he fully backed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Kashmir policy.

The senior Sinha, who heads a New Delhi-based ‘group of concerned citizens’, visited Kashmir on several occasions after the 2016 summer uprising triggered by the killing of popular militant commander Burhan Wani. Both the group and Sinha have repeatedly asked the government of India to start a dialogue with Hurriyat leaders in Kashmir without any preconditions.

Responding to a question about his father’s views, Jayant said that he (Yashwant Sinha) was an independent person and has his own independent views.

“As a citizen he has full rights to express his views and pursue his thinking. (But) I have full faith and confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government of India and I fully support the policy of our government and I back it,” said Jayant.

Last month, the government of India appointed former Intelligence Bureau chief Dineshwar Sharma as an interlocutor for Kashmir to hold a sustained dialogue with all sections of people of Jammu and Kashmir. Since his appointment, Sharma has twice travelled to the state and held interaction with mainstream political parties, some local groups and students, but hasn’t so far met three top separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik who have united to form the ‘Joint Resistance Leadership’.

Sharma has reportedly met former chairman of undivided Hurriyat and Muslim Conference chief Prof Abdul Gani Bhat.
