Shopian, Nov 11: Protests erupted in Kanjimula village in this south Kashmir district on Sunday after a girl was allegedly gang raped by her neighbor and his accomplices. Police has registered a case and started investigation.
According to the victim, she was kidnapped by her neighbor from her house in Kanjimula village on Saturday evening and then taken to unknown destination where he and three other people raped her.
“I was coming out of the washroom in the compound of my house when suddenly someone sprinkled chilly water into my eyes and then forcibly whisked me away into the red Santro vehicle,” said the victim.
She said there were three other gun-wielding persons in the vehicle “whom I couldn’t recognize but one of the persons was my neighbor.”
“I was taken to an unknown destination where they beat me up mercilessly, tore apart my clothes and then I was drugged till I felt unconscious,” the victim alleged.
She said that when she gained some consciousness in the morning she found herself lying naked. "The accused then bundled me in their vehicle and then pushed him down somewhere," said she.
“She was lying in semi-conscious state in the nearby village in Kulgam district and had bruises all over her body,” said the villagers.
As soon as the news spread, the villagers in large numbers staged protest demonstration. They were demanding the arrest of the culprits. The protesters first marched towards Kulgam and then Shopian police station.
The family of the girl alleged that the accused neighbor had some personal animosity against them.
“We have a dispute on orchard land and earlier also the same neighbor attacked the victim injuring her,” said Bashir Ahmad, uncle of the victim.
Meanwhile, police has taken cognizance of the matter and registered a case.
“We have registered a case and the investigations are on,” said Superintendent of Police (SP), Shopian, Mumtaz Ahmad.
He said that the medical examination of the victim has already been conducted in Kulgam and the report is awaited.
People have asked the police to get the culprits arrested or else they would again take to streets. The incident has shocked the locals, who want police to act on the matter.
