Education minister Syed Muhammad AltafBukhari Saturday said Army should concentrate on protection of borders rather than meddling in education sector in Jammu and Kashmir. The minister hit back at Army Chief Gen. BipinRawat over his remark yesterday that government schools in the state were spreading a "disinformation campaign which is radicalising the youth.”

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function here, the Education minister said the Army's "meddling" in the state's affairs was unacceptable.

“My students are not getting radicalised. But let him (Army Chief) do his job and so will I. There is no question of extremism among students due to the education system,” the minister said. "Perhaps their own work is not being done properly due to which we are suffering," he said.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Rawat said each classroom in government schools in Jammu and Kashmir has a separate map of the state besides that of India which sowed the seeds of thought of some kind of "separate identity" among the children. The Army Chief said there was no need for separate map for the State.

Bukhari said that every State had its own map in schools and there was nothing wrong in explaining the state map to students.

"Army Chief's assertion that there was no need for separate map for the State is totally unfair and unacceptable comment," he said. He said the Army Chief was a respected and well decorated officer and there was no doubt in his professionalism.

"But I don’t think he is an educationist that he will give sermons on education. He needs not to tell us whether there should be one or two maps. This is not acceptable. I think he doesn’t mean what he said,” AltafBukhari said. "No State accepts sermons from non-educationists."

The minister said the job of Army was to protect borders and “if that is done, incidents of violence will come down.”

“India is a democratic country and Army can’t control everything,” he said.

He said Army should do their job which has been assigned to them. “My job is providing education to students, I am doing that.” He said education was a State subject.

“CM is my boss, we can take only her sermons if she finds any fault in the education system,” he said.
