Srinagar, Dec 10: Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani has appealed the world bodies and organizations working for human rights to take cognizance of human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing executive council of conglomerate on ‘World Human Rights Day, Geelani said since 1947 people are striving for their basic rights. “But India with its all military might has suppressed the innocent people by resorting to most barbarous act of violence. Kashmir has become a war torn place,” a Hurriyat spokesman quoting Geelani said.
Expressing serious concern over the 6,000 unmarked graves in five districts of the Valley, Geelani said, “nobody knows whereabouts of the persons buried in these graves.”
“It has created panic among those families whose near and dear ones are missing. I impress upon the world bodies to ascertain the identity of the unmarked graves,” he said.
Geelani minced no words to accuse the human rights of adopting double standards by ignoring sufferings of Kashmiris.
He hailed the people for observing complete shutdown against life imprisonment to Kashmiri detainees.
“Since 1990, thousands of persons were arrested and cases registered under criminal laws, 840 are still logged in different jails, 33 have been awarded lifers and five have been penalised for death. All these detainees are prisoners of war and it is pertinent that proceedings against them under criminal law is sheer violation of international directives. Kashmir is a domain where they have even usurped the civilian authority,” Geelani said.
