National seminar on Dr Iqbal opens at KU

Varsity To Constitute Advisory Board For Research On Iqbal: Prof Talat

Srinagar, Nov 9: A two-day national seminar on “Iqbal and glory of man” organised by Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy began at Kashmir University campus Friday. Noted academicians and researchers on Iqbal studies from various parts of the country are participating in the seminar being organised to commemorate 135th birth anniversary of the great philosophical poet Dr Sir Muhammad Iqbal.
 Speaking at the seminar Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University Prof Talat said the university is considering constitution of an advisory board at Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy to boost the overall research activities at the centre.
 “University of Kashmir is one of the few varsities in India which has a full-fledged institute dedicated to the study and research on the works and philosophy of the great Poet of the East - Dr Sir Mohammad Iqbal and since this institute is one of the main pillars of our University therefore we are seriously considering the constitution of an advisory board which will give further impetus to the research and other activities at the institute,” said Prof Talat in his presidential remarks.
 Prof Talat said that after realising that very few students have fellowships at the Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy he is making serious efforts and trying to convince the authorities at UGC to introduce non-NET fellowships so that students from other than science streams can also pursue their research activities.
 While appreciating the initiatives of the Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy the Vice Chancellor said that the efforts of the centre are worth appreciating and they will soon get a new building for their department where they can conduct more such seminars and other academic activities on a larger scale.
 Delivering his keynote address on the occasion distinguished scholar of the sub-continent and expert on Iqbal studies Prof Qazi Ubaid-ur-Rehman Hashmi of Jamia Millia Islamia while speaking on Iqbal`s philosophy on the creative evolution of mankind said that Iqbal believed in the gradual rising note of – Khudi - or self-hood in the universe through the process of creative evolution till it reaches its highest point in human beings.
 Renowned educationist of the valley Dr AG Madhosh and Justice (retd) BA Kirmani also presented their views on the occasion.
 Earlier in her welcome address Prof Taskeena Fazil Director Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy said that Iqbal is concerned with developing the selfhood of the individual, and deals with the role and function of the individual in society.
 The inaugural session was followed by a technical session which was presided over by former Secretary Cultural Academy and historian MY Taing in which academicians including Prof Noor Muhammad Baba, Prof Hamid Nasim Rafiabadi, Prof Taskeena Fazil, Prof Bashir Ahmad Nehvi and Dr Farhat Ahsaas presented their papers.
