NHM employees today extended their strike for further 144 hours despite government claims of meeting most of their demands and assurance of looking into their core demand of regularisation.

The strike that started on 20th December 2017 completed 24th day today as several rounds of talks between government and NHM employees failed to yield any satisfying results.

“We demand a written assurance from the Health Minister, the verbal assurance from the authorities from time to time has proved a hoax and we are not going to call off our strike on verbal assurance,” spokesperson Joint Employees Coordination Committee of NHM Abdul Rouf said.

On 11 Jan Minister for Health and Medical Education Bali Bhagat informed the legislative assembly that government has conceded maximum demands of the NHM employees, even as their demand for regularisation of services is being looked into but the employees say that unless the government comes up with some concrete steps to regularise them they won’t call off the strike.

Health minister while addressing the legislative assembly said that a four member committee constituted by the government to look into the demands of the National Health Mission employees has presented its report and its recommendations are under consideration of the government.

The Minister further said that in its report the committee has put the number of NHM employees at 8402 and their regularisation in one go would have a financial implication of Rs 224 crore on the state exchequer.

The 24 day long strike has affected the health services to a large extent with people facing a lot of inconvenience in the rural and urban areas of Kashmir.
