Srinagar, Dec 10: The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) today observed the Human Rights Day and resolved to continue with its objective to protect human rights of every citizen of the State.
Chairing a function to observe the HR Day, Rafiq Fida member SHRC underscored the need to make human rights part of syllabus at the High School level. “There is need for social change on massive scale and the most powerful methods available with us under the democratic set-up is education. This fact cannot be denied that majority of our population is not aware of its problems and rights. Giving awareness to this vast population is gigantic task and can be undertaken only with strong will and dedication of the people of the country,” Fida said.
Fida said to maintain peace and tranquility in the world it is imperative on members of the society to respect, regard and safeguard human rights. “Mere observing Human Rights day or respecting human rights, international covenants, Indian constitution, National Human Rights Commission, State Human Rights Commission in various states is not enough. All charter rights needs to percolate to the last man in the country to confer value of these rights,” he said.
“A sensitive point of human rights violation came in the case of freedom, liberty of life and right to life. Even in such cases where people are killed in police encounter or die in police custody our laws should be transparent enough to convince people that the encounter is not fake and the people dying in police custody did not die on account of revenge or malafide intentions,” he said.
Earlier secretary SHRC Tariq Ahmad Banday said the Commission pledges to continue with its objectives. He said the Commission received 476 petitions and 275 petitions have been disposed off. “The Commission is receiving complaints in diversified subjects as such members of society have full faith in respect of and redressal of grievances with the Commission. We appeal all those whose rights are infracted. Violated and even to NGOs and other rights bodies to cooperate and extend a helping hand to SHRC to enable it to reach those who are in need and to perform its functions in a fair, just and transparent manner,” Banday said.
