Student protest detention of classmates at Dialgam

To protest the detention of their two boys their fellow students in Boys Higher secondary today held protests in school premises. They were demanding their release and withdrawal of cases against them.

The students of Boys Higher Secondary School at Dialgam Thursday protested against the arrest of two fellow students – who police say are wanted in different cases of stone pelting.

Burhan Ahmad son of Ghulam Nabi Rather and Hamid Ali son of Ali Muhammad Sheikh- both residents of Dialgam village and students of 12th standard in Boys Higher Secondary School were arrested by police from their houses 10 days back. The duo have been detained in Saddar police station Anantnag.

A minor boy Aamir, class 10th student from the same school, was also arrested by police but later released after a week.

To protest the detention of their two boys their fellow students in Boys Higher secondary today held protests in school premises. They were demanding their release and withdrawal of cases against them.

“We will continue to protest till our colleagues are not released,” said a group of protesting students.

However, the officials from civil administration later reached the school and pacified the students by assuring that they will be released by evening.

Police, confirmed that the duo have been booked under various charges but said a lenient approach will be adopted towards them considering they were students.

“The duo were wanted under various FIRs but since they are students we will release them soon. In fact they will be released today only ,” Nadeem Ahmad, in-charge Station House Officer (SHO) Anantnag told Greater Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the villagers of Dialgam have accused police of harassing the families of youth who police say are wanted in protests and arresting the family members.

Police has arrested Muzafar Sheikh who is father of a youth Aadil and Yasir Rather brother of another youth Taufeeq.  Both Aadil and Yasir according to police who area wanted in different FIRs related to stone pelting and arson are on run .

However, police feigned ignorance when asked why the relatives of the youth were arrested.  I am not aware about it as the concerned SHO is out on  leave,” in-charge SHO said.
