Protests erupted in Gudoora area of Pulwama district after bullet-riddled body of a local resident was found near the village Friday. Police sources said the slain was an over-ground worker of Lashkar Toiba.

Locals stated that the deceased was killed by government forces but police denied the allegation. The deceased has been identified as Muhammad Yusuf Lone, a resident of Gudoora.

Hundreds of people including men and women protested against the killing and raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.

Locals said that he was killed by government forces last night in Hakdipora and later his body was thrown near his village.

The body was found today morning near Gudoora, several hours after gunshots were heard in the nearby Hakripora village Thursday late evening where forces had launched cordon and search operation after inputs about the presence of militants.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral procession of Yusuf Lone.

Some militants appeared in the village and fired in the air near the graveyard, which according to locals was a gun salute to the deceased, reports said.

However the police denied the allegations of locals saying there was no involvement of forces in the killing.

SSP Pulwama Choudhary Muhammad Aslam said that the deceased was not killed by police or the forces.

He also denied that there was a link between the operation in Hakripora and killing of Lone. "Hakripora is located around three kilometers away from Gudoora. That was a separate operation which has nothing to do with the killing of Lone," he added.

However a police official demanding anonymity said that the deceased was an Over Ground Worker of Lashkar Toiba.

In the evening, police released a statement on the killing: “A dead body was found at Gudoora in the jurisdiction of police station Pulwama this morning. The body was later on identified as that of Mohammad Yousuf Lone son of Sana-ul-lah Lone resident of Gudoora, Pulwama. During the initial investigation it was revealed that the deceased was fired upon by militants during the intervening night of 18-19 May 2017. A case FIR number 174/2017 under section 302 RPC and 7/27 Arms Act has been registered in PS Pulwama. Further investigation is going on.”
