Srinagar, Dec 10: Police on Monday foiled an attempt by Independent MLA Engineer Rashid to march towards United Nations Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) where he was going to hand over a memorandum seeking revocation of AFSPA and PSA in Jammu and Kashmir.
As soon as Rashid along with supporters started a rally from Abi Guzar area of Lal chowk to proceed towards UNMGOIP office, policemen who were deployed in strength stopped them from marching ahead near Municipal Park.
Protesters offered stiff resistance and raised slogans demanding revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), release of political prisoners, seeking clemency for Afzal Guru and abolition of life imprisonment of recently convicted youth of Srinagar.
Later, Rashid speaking to media persons said that “Govt of India is depriving Kashmiris of life of honor and dignity and is encouraging state terrorism by allowing security forces to curb rights of Kashmiris under garb of draconian laws like AFSPA and Public Safety Act (PSA)”.
