Pahalgam: The inhabitants of this world famous tourist spot have demanded setting up of a degree college here saying it would help students of far-flung areas to pursue higher education.
They said in absence of a degree college poor students of remote areas here have to travel nearly 45 kilometers to reach Islamabad town for pursing higher studies.
“Many poor students from remote areas had to leave their studies midway as they could not afford to travel to Islamabad for pursing higher education in degree college there. Government cannot deny education to any student under the Right to Education Act. It is high time for the Government to accord sanction for establishing degree college here at the earliest,” they said.
Elaborating they said it is difficult for the students hailing from remote areas of Aru, Frislan, Chandanwari, Sheikhpora and Ovura Nallah to first reach Pahalgam and then travel to Islamabad town to reach the degree college there.
“This has taken a heavy toll on students who have left their studies and do menial jobs. Pahalgam is the only Tehsil in the entire state which despite its vast area and huge population has been denied a degree college,” said Mushtaq Ahmad a local.
He said every Tehsil in Islamabad district except Pahalgam has a degree college. “Though  Government recently approved 22 degree colleges in the state but Pahalgam was neglected,” he added.
The residents of the Dochnipora and Khowripora belt of the Tehsil said that their children are suffering in absence of a degree college.
“It almost takes us more than three hours to reach the college in Islamabad. By the time we reach there most of the classes are already over,” said students from Hapatnar, Yashinar and Nagbal adding that the situation gets worse during winter.
They said many students of the area are left with no choice than to pursue higher education through distance mode or go for private examination.
“The college should be established at such a place in the Tehsil which will be centrally located” they added.
