An image of white coat wearing MBBS doctors often comes to mind when somebody wishes to pursue career in medicine.

I often get calls from students who wish to be in this field but either couldn’t crack the entrance or don’t have enough money to privately pursue the degree. My reply to them is not to get disheartened as the field of medicine has wide range of career options and many of them more important and significant than being a physician.

If you have a flair for medicines, dream about finding cure to dreaded diseases or discover new medicines and diagnosis techniques, the medical field is best suited for you. Don’t let failure in entrance examinations block your path towards a stream, where one can serve humanity in so many ways. Medical field contains the certificate courses, medical diploma courses, bachelor degree courses, master degree courses, doctoral, post-doctoral research and many short time knowledge booster courses.

B. Sc (Biotech):  The mere possibility of what a student can do with Biotechnology is mind-boggling. Its applications range from industrial sector such as food and beverage industry, textile industry, biological products, medicines and pharmaceuticals, to the requirements of agriculture, animal husbandry, nutrition and environmental conservation. And the good thing is the list is growing with every possible new discovery. After 10+2 a student must either opt for an undergraduate course in biotechnology or any subject that is directly or indirectly related to biological sciences. Apart from three years BSc Biotech, a student also has an option for B Tech in biotechnology, with later possessing some edge over the former.

BSc (Operation Theatres): Surgical Technology or Operation Theatre Technology is a specific technical profession in the field of health science. These technical medical professionals are an essential part of the operation unit team who work along with the surgeon, anesthesiologist and nurse in order to provide quality patient care before, during, and after surgery. Every operation theatre of every hospital needs them so one can imagine the job scope.

BE in Environmental Engineering: Environmental engineering is a division of engineering that applies the knowledge of science and engineering principles to preserve and improve the environment such as water, air and soil resources in order to provide healthy environment.

A drastic increase in environmental pollution across the globe has led to various research and development works in an effort to contain this menace and a relatively new discipline called environmental engineering has emerged which is providing excellent career opportunities.

Opportunities in environmental engineering have increased in last couple of decades and the professionals are recruited by companies working in chemical, geological, petroleum and mining sectors.Job of environmental engineers in India is expected to widen up as owing to tremendous economic development the country is facing high degree of environmental pollution and environmental engineers will have to check it.

BSc. Radiography: One of the most sought after courses in medicine, Radiography is a paramedical professional course, offered to individuals who will one day perform diagnostic tests in medical treatment with the use of radiation.

This includes the use of ultrasound, X-ray, CT scan, MRI, etc.Radiographers work as a part of the healthcare team in the Diagnostic Imaging Department, Accident & Emergency, Intensive Care Unit and Operating Theatre.A career in radiography can be very promising as their demand is very high.

B.Pharma (Bachelor of Pharmacy): The B.Pharma is one of the popular job oriented course among the science students after class 12th. In this course the students study about the drugs and medicines, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Medicinal Chemistry etc. The students can either become a pharmacist or go for higher studies in the Pharmacy i.e. M.Pharma and master of Pharmacy. This field is one of the evergreen fields in the medical sector, with the increasing demand of Pharma professional every year.

Physiotherapist:Physiotherapy is a science that helps improve movement dysfunction, and promote functions of the human body and optimal health. This involves assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disease and disability through physical means.

People can either work in India or go abroad and flourish their career in physiotherapy.A person choosing a career in medical field asa physiotherapist ought to select the course called BTP, which is of duration of 4 years. 

Optometrists:Ophthalmic Optics is a science, which deals with the structure, function and working of the human eye. Popularly known as Optometry, this health care profession is concerned with examination, diagnosis and treatment of eyes, specially related to visual, optical symptoms, refractive errors and their correction, using lenses and other optical aids.

The scope for optometric practice in India and abroad is great and unlimited. It is a dynamic and challenging career, which could achieve personal growth, community respect and offers job flexibility, financial success and unlimited opportunities.

Sanitary inspector:Sanitary inspector is a health professional, who is in charge of carrying out of hygienic control in a state in a variety of fields. Such fields are shared hygiene, nutrition hygiene, epidemiology, adolescent hygiene as well as labor hygiene. A person making a choice from careers in medical fieldasa sanitary inspector ought to select the course called the Sanitary Inspector Course. 

BSc Nursing:Nursing involves taking care of patients suffering from all sorts of physical and psychological maladies. Nurses constantly have to monitor the condition of these patients and administer prescribed medicines at regular intervals. They also assist medical specialists and help set up medical equipment in operation theatres and clinical laboratories.

Other than these general activities, nurses can acquire specialisation in a particular area such as midwifery, cardiac care, intensive care, orthopaedics, paediatrics and so on. Other opportunities for qualified nurses include teaching, administration and research jobs. Both men and women pursue a career in Nursing and demand of nurses continues to increase every eyar. 

Anesthesiology: Anesthesiologists are highly trained specialists who make medical decisions related to anesthesia, while taking care of the well-being and safety of the patient.

Your job will be to maintain a patient’s condition in controlled unconsciousness, delivering him pain relief during an obstetrical, surgical or any other medical procedure. You may also become an anesthesiologist assistant, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists or Anesthesia Technician.

BSc Speech therapy: Speech therapists are professional people who help people to talk clearly. A patient may not speak clearly because he was born with a speech disorder, or he lost his speech in an accident. A speech therapist may also counsel and support a patient’s family.

Hematology: As a hematologist, you take care of patients with an entire range of malignant or non-malignant diseases.

You may also specialize in different areas of hematology, including transfusion medicine, Hemato-Oncology, obstetric hematology, laboratory hematology, pediatric hematology, bone marrow transplantation etc.

BSc Medical Laboratory Technology:Medical Laboratory Technology also called Clinical laboratory science is an allied health profession, which is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease through the use of clinical laboratory tests.

These tests help doctors to detect, diagnose and treat diseases. A Medical laboratory technician is able to specialize in any among five diverse areas, which are chemistry, blood banking, immunology, hematology, or microbiology. He/she is also asked to inform other medical workers on the lab results, preserve equipment, and preserve laboratory accounts.

B.O.T (Occupational Therapy): An occupational therapist (different from physiotherapist) helps individuals with a physical or mental illness, so that they can come back to their normal state. With the help of different latest methods, they help patients gain maximum recovery after a long illness. As an occupational therapist, you will be involved in a wide range of educational, creative and recreational activities.

Besides these courses,there are more than three dozen paramedical courses from which a student can choose from and establish his/her career. In these fields there is always an option for higher studies culminating with PhD.

The scope in Kashmir is huge as till date we have produced just one PhD in nursing. Still wanting to be a doctors, then a student can chose from BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery), B. H. M. S. (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery), B. A. M. S. (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) orB.U.M.S (Unani Medicine) as these are considered good alternatives to MBBS.
