On her visit to Mendhar to meet the family which on Sunday lost five members in the firing from across the border, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti urged India and Pakistan to talk to resolve their issues so that peace was restored on the borders.

Talking to reporters, Mehbooba said that Kashmiris had borne the “maximum brunt” of the partition of the two countries.

“I appeal to the two countries to have mercy on Kashmiris,” she said. “I to appeal to Prime Minister NarendraModi and rulers of Pakistan to stop this shelling.”

Terming the partition of the country as unfortunate, Mehbooba said the people of J&K  were not a party to it but unfortunately were paying a heavy price of it.

The CM called upon the two countries to respect the 2003 ceasefire agreement so that the people living in border areas could live in peace. “The two countries are not able to build roads, yet they are spending money on buying ammunition,” Mehbooba said.

Earlier, addressing people, Mehbooba said it was unfortunate that the people of border areas were paying a heavy price in continued shelling. She appealed to Prime Minister NarendraModi to take steps to put the state on the road to peace. She also appealed to the leadership of Pakistan to see the logic of peaceful engagement and dialogue with India as wars in the past have yielded nothing except devastation, death and destruction.

The CM recalled the decade long peace along the borders and an atmosphere of reconciliation within the state which followed after the then Prime Minister, AtalBihari Vajpayee’s initiatives of reconciliation and dialogue in the State. Similarly, she said, Prime Minister, NarendraModi also took the bold step of visiting Lahore but unfortunately incidents like Pathankot had stalled the process.
