International footballers Mehraj Ud Din Wadoo and Ishfaq Ahmad on Wednesday termed Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Drabu’s announcement of creating football league as revolutionary step but suggested that Government has to make infrastructure better at ground level.

Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu presented budget 2017-18 in the Jammu and Kashmir legislature in Jammu on Wednesday in which he announced institute a football league and allocation of Rs. 2 crore for that.

“As a tribute to Mufti Sahib on his first death anniversary, I propose to institute a football league in which teams from within the State will participate. The format for the proposed Mufti Memorial Gold Cup will be worked out by the J&K Football Association which will be the organizing body for the league tournament. For this I shall allocate Rs. 2 crore,” Drabu said.

Wadoo and Ishfaq welcomed the step.

“To be honest I am surprised to hear this. It is first time that any one has specifically mentioned anything for football in J&K Budget. I congratulate Dr Drabu for this and hope that it will help us to develop the game in the State,” said Wadoo.

Ishfaq Ahmad who is part of Sachin Tendulkar owned Kerala Blaster’s side, also welcomed the announcement and said, “It is big step and should be welcomed. No one before has done this and if State plans organize league of this magnitude then they should first get their ground level infrastructure right. I am sure they would be having their eye on that as well”.
