As per new guidelines under NFSA, the government has stopped supply of subsidized sugar to Above Poverty Line families while Below Poverty Line families will be provided sugar at subsidized rates.

Admitting the cut in subsidy for consumers, the minister for FCS&CA Choudhary Zulfikar Ali said the subsidy was abolished by the Government of India for all the states after the implementation of National Food Safety Act.

The shortage of distribution of essentials was reported by this newspaper in various areas and to this residents of Shivpora clarified that concerned store keeper has been diligently maintaining and distributing stock supply in the area.

“We have no issues with the distribution of ration supply with the store keeper. However, APL families are feeling the heat of no sugar subsidy under NFSA,” said Abbas Ahmad Bhat.

He lamented government for not enhancing sugar quota to APL families in the city as more than half of the population in Srinagar has APL cards.

“This is sheer injustice to APL families who have been denied sugar quota under NFSA,” he added.
