Continuing with its efforts to encourage people to follow traffic rules during the ongoing 28th Road Safety Week, Traffic police on Wednesday organized a bike rally.

The bikers were accompanied by marching band to get attention of commuters.

The rally was flagged off by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic (Srinagar) Fayaz Ahmad at Polo View Headquarters. The rally passed through various routes including Regal Chowk, Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar), MA Road and other adjacent areas.

During the rally, pamphlets were distributed among commuters to apprise them about importance of following traffic rules.

“We are proud to be part of this awareness rally. We want to encourage people to follow traffic rules,” said one of the traffic cops.

Later, the SSP held an interaction with academicians and students at SP College here. He urged upon students to organize awareness programmes and encourage others to make roads safer.

“Wearing helmet, fastening seat belt and not exceeding speed limit on roads are the keys of roads safety. We have to collectively respect each other’s rights. Our rights to drive on roads should not endanger the life of other commuters,” the SSP said.

He exuded confidence that more youth would join the awareness campaign in coming days.

“If you (youth) want to campaign for lower speed limits, better traffic enforcement, better facilities for safe walking and cycling, or any other road safety measures in your area, Road Safety Week is the perfect time. Contact your local government agency and tell them what measures you think are needed in your area and if you are organizing your own Road Safety Week, ask them to support and publicize your activity,” the SSP said.

He also urged commuters to suggest ways which they deem fit, for smooth regulation of traffic on city roads.
