Netizens take to Twitter against footpath encroachment at Karanagar

Scores of netizens of the summer capital took to the micro blogging site Twitter to point out the encroachment of footpaths by two-wheeler and second-hand car brokers in Karanagar area here.

Demanding pedestrian rights, hash tags #FootpathShowroom and #FootpathFungus witnessed over 1000 tweets in two days. Directed at Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Traffic Police and CM’s grievance cell, the netizens demanded freeing of footpaths from second-hand car brokers and two-wheeler shopkeepers in Karanagar.

Karanagar is demarcated as a residential area under Srinagar Master Plan, but the prolific growth of commercial real estate in the area has created a lot of congestion in an otherwise spacious locality. Large number of second-hand car and two-wheeler dealers also misuse public footpaths for showcasing their vehicles.

“Is it really that hard for the administration to stop this menace of footpath encroachment in Karanagar area of Srinagar? Seems used car dealers are more powerful than the administration and the babus in power have sold out their conscience,” tweeted Fahad Manzoor.  “Administration is silent because they are a part of it! They don’t do anything till the water tips over. This is a crucial junction taken over by thugs!,” tweeted Tabish Habib.

“The car brokers and footpath encroachers don’t even let a stray dog sleep on these footpaths. Let alone a civilian. This is a chronic SMC-Dukandar-Police nexus,” another user tweeted.

“We all shy away from our responsibilities and the political unrest has provided the biggest and best veil to do so. Unrest doesn’t hamper me from being human, a civilized community and a responsible co-deweller” tweeted @alsaba_younus.

Assistant Professor-Management Studies, Tuba Shabir (@tubashabir) tweeted, “Its time for administration to act before Karanagar becomes roadless”

“I’ll take care of Karan Nagar. Please be patient,” IG Traffic Basat Rath responded with an assurance, tagging SP Traffic Srinagar City in his tweet.
