Sonwar residents seek closure of old dumping yard

Residents of Palpora area of Sonwar here Sunday appealed to the Badamibagh Cantonment board to close the dumping yard from the area saying that the site has become a nuisance for them due to pungent smell.

The residents said that the Board has already installed separate dustbins outside every home against monthly payment.

A small area fitted with an iron-made door at Ward number 4 has been used by the people of the area to throw garbage and other waste material. But of late, the Cantonment Board has installed separate dustbin outside every house and now there was no fun of keeping the existing space still open for garbage,” said Hilal Ahmed Bhat, a resident of Palpora Sonwar.

Another resident Muhammad Aslam said the dumping yard has become a major source of pollution for the residents and also for the students of the nearby Girls Higher Secondary School Palpora. Another resident, Altaf Ahmed said that now that summer is approaching, the dumping site would turn into a stinking pit due to the smell the waste food, vegetable and other things would produce.

“In the past, we have been appealing the Board to close the dumping yard but our appeals have always fallen on deaf ears,” he said.
