Srinagar, Nov 11: On the eve of World Diabetes Day, the department of Endocrinology, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura organised a symposium here on Thursday.
According to an official communiqué, the programme attended by the faculty, guests, postgraduates, nurses and paramedics was held to spread awareness among the people about the disease.
The theme of the symposium was “Global Epidemic of Diabetes.”
Director SKIMS, Prof. Abdul Hamid Zargar highlighted the research work done by the Institute on various facets of diabetes. Prof Zargar expressed concern about the increasing prevalence of the disease in young, but at the same time expressed satisfaction about the increase in life expectancy in people with diabetes because of better treatment available in Kashmir.
“During recent times there has been significant increase in the life expectancy of people with diabetes,” Director SKIMS said. He gave an overall sub-continental scenario of diabetes as of now and expressed concern about the disturbing escalations in the number of people with diabetes being witnessed throughout the world particularly in the developing regions.
Organizing secretary, Dr B A Laway, Dean SKIMS Prof M A Darzi, Additional Professor of Endocrinology, Dr Shariq Rashid Masoodi and Associate Professor Endocrinology Dr M A Ganie also spoke on the occasion.
