In a shocking incident, a bundle of twenty five votes went missing from a counting hall in upper Sanai panchayathalqa of Surankote block in Poonch, after which two officials of rural development department were suspended.

One among the two suspended officials has also been arrested by the police, whereas district panchayat election officer has also recommended re-polling in the panchayathalqa.

Deputy commissioner Poonch Raul Yadav told Greater Kashmir that the counting process was going on smoothly, when a rural development department employee (gram rozgarsewak) entered the hall, with the help of another gram rozgarsewak. “The official was made to leave from the counting hall by thestaff,” he said.

"However, later a bundle of 25 votes was found missing. All attempts to recover the bundle failed,” he said, adding, “The two rural development department officials, one who entered the hall and the other who let him in, have been placed under suspension and police have been asked to take cognizance.”

The matter is of a serious nature as bundle went missing and the margin of votes between the winner and runner up candidates is of only 13 votes, an official said. He identified the suspended officials as Irfan Ali and Niaz Ahmed.

"I have written a letter to chief electoral commissioner and recommended re-polling," deputy commissioner said.

Senior superintendent of police Poonch Rajiv Pandey said that one of the gram rozgarsewak has been arrested and cognizance has been taken against both of them.
