The historic Bhairo Dev Jhanki commenced Thursday under tight security arrangements in Rajouri town.

Pertinently, Bhairo Jhanki, a several decade-old tradition of Rajouri, is taken out for seven days before the festival of Holi.

On Thursday, the Jhanki was taken out in Rajouri old town. It started from a temple near Sanatan Dharam Sabha and passed through the entire old town area, before culminating at the temple.

Thousands of people drawn from all walks of life took part in the procession, wherein tight security arrangements were put in place by authorities. Heavy deployment of police and para-military forces was put in place to foil any untoward incident.

While talking about popular belief behind the Jhanki, chairperson of Bhairo Dev Committee said, “Several decades ago, a plague spread in Rajouri town leading to large scale deaths. After this, a spiritual saint of that time suggested that a man be painted in black and made to travel across the entire town, which will curb the plague.”

"As suggested by the saint, a man, painted black from head to toe, was made to travel across the town. Since then, Bhairo Jhanki has been taken out for seven days every year before Holi,” he said.

Senior superintendent of police, Yougal Manhas, said that tight security arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of week-long Bhairo Jhanki.
