Much to the chagrin of patients, the X-ray and ultrasonography machines provided to Public Health Centre (PHC) Ashtingoo last year are gathering dust as there is no staff to operate them.

The machines, according to an official, were allotted to the hospital last year after huge public outcry. However, the machines are lying unused as there is no competent staff member to operate them.

In the absence of the facilities, the patients are asked to travel to other hospitals for major and minor X-rays and USGs. “We have complained many times to the head of the hospital but our complaints seem to have fallen on deaf ears,” said an elderly, Abdul Ghani Malik of Ashtingoo.

A patient at the hospital, who identified herself as Misra Begum, said despite the facility available at their doorstep they were being forced to travel to Bandipora and Sopore towns for X-ray and USG.

When contacted, block medical officer Bandipora, Dr. Syed Rehman, said measures are being taken to make both the machines operational. “I have brought the matter into the notice of higher-ups and the staff will be deputed soon,” he said, adding that the machines will be made operational within a week.
