Varmul, Jan 14: Master Muhammad Ahsan Dar, founder commander of largest Kashmiri armed resistance group, Hizbul Mujahideen, was arrested on Wednesday morning by police in Naidkhai, Sumbal. Police claims his arrest as a “big catch.”
The deputy inspector general of police Varmul, Abdul Gani Mir, told reporters that after receiving “concrete information” that Dar was trying to sneak into Sumbal police “laid a siege and arrested him in Naidkhai.” Dar had no arms on him and he had an identity card in the name of Altaf Ahmad Wani at the time of arrest, police said.
“He was the first supreme commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and the founder of the Muslim Mujahideen (MM), and presently working as chief coordinator of different outfits. His arrest was a big catch,” the DIG said.
Dar was arrested and charged in 1993 with threats to national security, but was released on parole six years later. Police says he crossed over to AJK in 1999 but returned last year.
In a video delivered to local news agencies in Srinagar in July 2008, Dar said that as long as he is alive he will continue to struggle for liberation of Kashmir from Indian rule.
The DIG said Dar returned to Valley via Bangladesh border but “remained in contact with the intelligence agencies of Pakistan.” In Valley Dar was promoting coordination between LeT, Hizbul Mujahideen and other militant organizations in the state, the DIG claimed.
“He has organized number of attacks on security forces and was trying to give afresh impetus to the militant activities within the state and also in the rest of the country,” the DIG Varmul said.

HIZB DISOWNS DAR
Hizbul Mujahideen has dissociated itself from Ahsan Dar. In a

statement, Hizb spokesman Ehsan Elahi said his organization has nothing to do with Dar since 1991. “Dar has nothing to do with Hizb nor was he on any mission of the organization,” he said.

Dar is said to have crossed the Line of Control in 1984, and again in 1988 the year he was arrested. But during custody when he was brought to a hospital for treatment he managed to escape and again went to AJK in the year 1989 and returned to found the Hizbul Mujahideen.
In 1992 Dar founded his own outfit Muslim Mujahideen. He was arrested in 1993 and released in the year 1999 when he crossed over to AJK along with his family.
Dar is said to be a close associate of Hizb supreme Syed Salahuddin, and top deceased Hizb commanders Maqbool Illahi and Abdul Majid Dar.
