The 17-year old pacer who hails from Ashmuji area of District Kulgam, Rasikh Salaam Dar has become the latest entrant from J&K in the elite list to make it to the India Premier League (IPL).
Rasikh Salam was on Tuesday grabbed by Mumbai Indians for the base price of Rupees 20 lakhs in the IPL player’s auction held in Jaipur. Prior to the auction there was a talk that Mumbai Indians who had earlier last month called him for the selection trials would go for him. When the name of Rasikh Salaam came up in the list for auction, Mumbai Indians raised the paddle to grab the unknown cricket star from J&K for Rs 20 lakhs.
Rasikh hails from Ashmuji area of Kulgam district and is currently part of J&K Under-19 team for Cooch Behar Trophy. Rasikh hit the cricket scene of J&K this year after doing well in district tournament conducted by J&K Cricket Association. He was shortlisted for the talent hunt trial under Irfan Pathan and from there on, there was no looking back for the youngster.
Pathan in a first look saw something special in a youngster and shortlisted him instantly.  He was first given chance in practice matches at Sheri-Kashmir cricket stadium where in he impressed everyone. He even went on to take a brilliant hat-trick. Under the guidance of Pathan and Parvez Rasool, Rasikh went on to play for J&K senior team in Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day tournament and prior to that in pre-season tour to Andhra Pradesh. In both the tournament youngster impressed everyone and went to make a name for himself. Salam also recently took six wicket haul for J&K in Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy.
During Vijay Hazare trophy tournament he was spotted by Mumbai Indians spotters and was called up for selection trials to Mumbai. Rasikjh went to Mumbai and took part in two days trials and as per the officials, selectors were impressed with the talent of the Youngsters. Mumbai Indians had kept his name in player’s auction shortlist and then bid for him.
Terming it a dream come true, Rasikh said that he has been working hard over the years to see himself on a big stage.
“I have over the years worked hard on my game and wanted to play at the highest level. This year I did well in district tournament and then was called for talent hunt. In the trails, I impressed Pathan bhai and others and was selected for senior team. It is dream of every cricketer to see himself in IPL and I am no different,” Salaam said.
Rasikh, youngest of the four children of a teacher, said that his family always supported him.
“Without the support of my family I would not been here. I am currently part of J&K Under-19 team and it is all due to continuous support of my father, mother, two elder brothers and my sister. I will try my best to make J&K proud whenever I get chance to play for the Mumbai Indian’s in IPL,” he added.
Apart from Rasikh there were other players Parvez Rasool, Umar Nazir and Manzoor Pandav also in auction. While Parvez went unsold, the name of other two didn’t come up for reckoning.
Rasikh is fourth ever player from J&K to get into IPL team. While Parvez Rasool is only one to play in IPL from J&K, Manzoor Pandav was last year taken by Kings XI Punjab and before that Mohammad Mudhasir by same franchisee in development squad. Both didn’t get a game to play.
