Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) has expressed concern over NIA issuing summons to Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and authorities imposing a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement here an EJAC spokesman said that a meeting of the committee chaired by its president Fayaz Ahmed Shabnam. “Participants discussed the prevailing situation in the Valley and it was felt that there is the atmosphere of fear prevailing everywhere,” he added.

While addressing the meeting, president EJAC Fayaz Ahmad Shabnam said that the people are in the dilemma of fear and confusion and it is the responsibility of the government to play an important role in ensuring that peace prevails.  “Instead of assuring people the government is harassing the religious leadership and preachers which will further deteriorate the situation. Dr Moulvi Umar Farooq is not only one of the top religious heads but also the Mirwaiz Kashmir. Sentiments of the people are associated with him and people have great reverence for him,” he added.

Shabnam said  that “banning Jamaat  Islami will vitiate the atmosphere in Kashmir. Jamaat is a well established organisation that has always helped Kashmiris and other people. Jamaat has also helped in developing the education sector in the Valley and has always been in front for the upliftment of the backward. Jamaat e Islami has been helping number of orphans and widows and many of them are still in their care.”

He said that the summons to the Mirwaiz and banning of religious organisation is a “direct interference in the religious affairs of the people.”
