J&K Police on Thursday foiled protest march by Sakshar Bharat Mission (SBM) employees who are demanding regularization of their service in school education department.

The protesting employees assembled at Polo Ground here and started march towards Raj Bhawan. However, the police swung into action and thwarted their march.

Amid slogans like “we want justice”, several protesting employees were bundled in police vehicles and detained at a local police station here.

The protesting employees threatened to go on indefinite hunger strike if their demands were not fulfilled by August 29.

“We held similar demonstration earlier also to press for fulfillment of our demands but government is unmoved,” they said.

One of the employees said that government had earlier issued “notification” to frame job policy for them and had sought reports from district and zonal offices about their services.

The employees said that indifferent attitude of government has left them in a state of distress and mental trauma.

“We are left with no option but to go for hunger strike,” the employees said.

The SBM is a government of India initiative launched in September 2009 to create a literate society through a variety of teaching learning programs for non-literate and neo-literate of 15 years and above.
