J&K senior football team is at the verge of getting knocked out of the prestigious 63rd Santosh Trophy tournament north zone group as they were beaten by Punjab by 1-0 goals at Sharda University Noida on Thursday.

After being held to 1-1 draw by Delhi in its first match on Tuesday, J&K went in this match with the aim to upset favorites Punjab. They were in need of an outright win in order to keep their hopes of qualifying for the main round alive. However, they couldn’t do that as Punjab emerged winner by 1-0.

In the match, Punjab got penalty in 36th minute which they were able to convert into goal. J&K got couple of excellent chances to equalize the score but were not able to utilize these chances . In the closing minutes of game, Punjab knowing they have upper hand kept wasting time in order to keep JK away from scoring an equalizer. Match ended with 1-0 score line in favor of Punjab. In two matches Punjab have registered two wins while as J&K have got one draw out of two matches.

Another side of the group, Delhi on Thursday defeated Himachal Pradesh by 6-0 goals. J&K will next take on Himachal Pradesh in its next match on January 20.

J&K have slight chance of making it to next round as they lodged protest against Delhi for fielding overage player instead of Under-21 year old in the game. If enquiry outcome comes in favor of J&K and match is awarded to the team then they will be have to beat Himachal by huge margin to make it to the main round.
