Southern Kashmir observed a spontaneous and complete shutdown for the fourth day on Tuesday to mourn the weekend killing of seven civilians and three militants by government forces in Pulwama.

Despite no strike call given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) the five south Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Awantipora and Shopian shut in mourning and protest over the killings.

All shops, business establishments, private offices and some government establishments remained closed while both private and public transport was off the roads.

Other educational institutions also remained closed in most of the south Kashmir.

Angry protestors clashed government forces at Khudwani area of Kulgam district.

"Youth pelted forces with stones and in response they lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse the protesting youth," a witness said.

Internet services continued suspended across southern Kashmir on the fourth day.

People from various areas kept visiting homes of slain militants and civilians to offer prayers and extend their solidarity with the bereaved families.

Contingents of police and paramilitary troopers were deployed at the sensitive locations in Pulwama to thwart any 'element of violence', a police official, adding the overall the situation overall was peaceful.

On Saturday, seven civilians were killed in Sirnoo area of Pulwama after government forces opened fire on protesters following a gunfight that left three militants and a soldier dead.

The JRL had called for a three-day shutdown to protest the weekend killings.
