JRL calls for shutdown today

The JRL also strongly opposed “re-establishment” of forces’ camps in Khudwani, Redwani, Kulgam, Shopian, Alamgari Bazar, Khonkhan near Transport Yard, stating that “it’s a new ploy to instill fear among the local population of these areas.”

The Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik Thursday expressed deep grief over the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Manan Wani and his associate Ashiq Hussain Zargar in Handwara.

In a statement, the JRL recounted the killing of thousands of youth by forces, whether militants or civilians, and said: “It’s an immense tragedy of Kashmir that our budding youth, professors and engineers, intellectuals and writers like martyr Manan, the future of our nation, are paying the price of greed and follies of those, who, since 1947, misled the people through deceit.”

“Today our fourth generation is bearing the brunt of that fraud and manipulation. Forced by broken promises of India, non-implementation of UN resolutions, deployment of lakhs of soldiers to control their land and the resultant severe repression and human rights abuses of its people, hundreds of our bright and budding youth take to arms and in the process sacrifice their precious lives for freedom so that people of this land can get an opportunity to determine their destiny and future.”

The JRL statement said that no nation wants to shoulder the coffins of its youth. “It is most painful, but when oppression and subjugation reaches its height as is the case in Kashmir, people especially the young are forced to stand up to resist it. Government of India has pushed our youth to such a fate,” it said.

“The nation pays homage to these fearless sons of the soil and their sacrifice,” the resistance leaders said, urging people to observe a complete shutdown on Friday (October 12) to pay homage to Manan and his associate and protest such killings.

The JRL also strongly opposed “re-establishment” of forces’ camps in Khudwani, Redwani, Kulgam, Shopian, Alamgari Bazar, Khonkhan near Transport Yard, stating that “it’s a new ploy to instill fear among the local population of these areas.”

The leadership said that because of construction of new camps, people in many areas of southern Kashmir have “started migrating to safer places.”

“The fact remains that Kashmir is already the world’s highest militarised zone where every area has a forces’ bunker and camps that have already made the life of people miserable,” the JRL said, demanding “immediate removal” of all the camps.
