Majid Ahmed Dar, one of the four militants killed in Srigufawara and believed inspired by the Islamic State was buried Saturday in his native village after six rounds of funeral prayers.

Hundreds of mourners started streaming into Tallangam Friday evening when body of the slain militant was brought to his family home making his relatives push his burial to Saturday.

“We laid him (Dar) to rest around 10:30 am in his ancestral graveyard. More than five thousand people participated in his last rites,” said Bilal Ahmad, a local resident who participated in the last rites of the slain militant.

The interment of the Dar had to take place on late Friday evening but the heavy rush of mourners, pouring in from adjoining and far off places precipitated the family to defer the burial for Monday morning.

Residents from neighbouring villages thronged his home to have a last glimpse, shouting pro-freedom slogans.

“Given this heavy rush of mourners, we decided to bury him (Dar) on Saturday morning,” said a member of his family.

The 21-year-old militant signed up for Lashkar-e-Toiaba militant group in July 2017. After a few months, according to senior police official, he parted ways with the outfit and joined ISJK.

Banners with Dar’s pictures on them were put up all along the main thoroughfare leading to Tallangam. Some mourners carried black flags resembling that of the IS.

Pulwama town remained closed for the second straight day against the militant and civilian killings in Srigufwara.

All the shops, business establishments and government offices remained shut while commercial transport was largely off the roads. Some private vehicles, particularly the two-wheelers, were seen plying on the link roads of district.

Authorities suspended mobile internet service in the area.
