Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission has issued notices to deputy commissioner Baramulla and senior superintendent of police Sopore into the killing of Hurriyat activist Hakeemur Rahman Sultani.

The notices were issued today by SHRC chairman (rtd) justice Bilal Nazki on Friday, asking the DC and SSP to file a compliance report into the killing of Sultani on September 9 by unidentified gunmen.

The SHRC notice comes in response to the petition filed by rights activist Muhammad Ahsan Untoo.

The petitioner had urged the SHRC to appoint a fact-finding team to probe the killing of Sultani and to find out why political workers and common people are being killed. The petitioner said that Sultani was killed when he was on way to his house at Reshipora Sopore on September 9.

The petitioner has also demanded compensation to the family members of Sultani who has four daughters. Pertinently, the joint resistance leadership has termed the killing as gruesome while as police had blamed militants.

The petitioner said it has to be probed as to who is behind the killing of common people as it was a serious issue.

Sultani was shot dead in Bomai area of Sopore even as the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) expressed deep shock over what it called the “gruesome murder.”

Police has said that Sultani, an activist of Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani, was killed when he was on way to his residence in Reshipora area at around 12.30 pm.

“He was driving his own car when some gunmen appeared near his residence and fired a bullet into his head. He died instantly,” said a relative of the deceased.

He said that Sultani was immediately shifted to sub-district hospital Sopore where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

As the news of Sultani’s killing spread in the area, thousands of people rushed to his residence and staged a massive pro-freedom protest. Amid heavy sloganeering, the deceased was laid to rest at a local martyrs’ graveyard where thousands of people joined his funeral prayers.

Sultani is survived by five daughters, wife and aged mother. The deceased hit limelight in 2009 after spearheading an agitation seeking removal of army’s ‘Rajinder Post’ in Bomai whose soldiers were allegedly involved in killing of two local youths that year. The post was later shifted after massive public outrage.
