The Aligarh Muslim University on Friday suspended an undergraduate student from Kashmir for allegedly lauding a militant outfit in a social media post after the strike in Pulwama in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) spokesperson Omar Peerzada told PTI that the matter is being further probed and “strong deterrent action” will be taken once the investigation is complete.

“AMU has zero tolerance for any such pernicious activity and anyone indulging in such an act will not be spared,” Peerzada said.

The student’s alleged remarks had triggered outrage on social media.

However, the Kashmiris students studying at the varsity denied that any such post was ever made. A statement issued by the students said the student had denied tweeting the objectionable remarks and said that it was being “spread in his name”.

“In the last couple of years, some elements are continuously trying to portray AMU in bad light. We, the students from Jammu and Kashmir at Aligarh Muslim University have also been targeted on frivolous grounds in the past.”

“The concerned student named Basim Hilal by the news portals studies Mathematics at AMU and is one of the brightest students at the campus. He has been very efficient student and has secured above 90% marks in his 10th and 12th classes. Defaming a student of high academic credentials is regrettable and it amounts to jeopardizing the career of a bright student. We want to communicate the people across the spectrum that Kashmiri students at Aligarh Muslim University are focused on their academics and no attempts should be made to falsely implicate us or to threaten us. No attempts should be made to instil fear among the Kashmiri students across India and we should be allowed a democratic space to present our point of view in a reasonable manner. We don’t want to live under fear, and we want an environment of peace to exist and spread.”
