Leh ventures into greenhouse farming, holds 1st winter KisanMela

Defying the age old tradition of only summer season farming in Ladakh, farmers of Leh district exhibited their greenhouse grown vegetables and perennial potted flowers at the first ever winter KisanMela held at farmers hostel Agling on Thursday.

Chief Executive Councillor LAHDC LehJamyangTseringNamgyal inaugurated the first winter KisanMelaorganised by the district agriculture office Leh under the scheme ATMA (CSS) SMAE 2018-19, an official spokesperson said. This exhibition was organised with the aim for revival of the traditional crops. DIHAR, CAZIRI and KVK also had their stalls for demonstration.

   

CEC appreciated the agricultural department and associated research stations for making efforts to organize the Kisanmela in winter. Terming agriculture as an integral part of Ladakh, he recalled the age-old self-sufficient nature of Ladakh when everything from food, clothing to shelter was produced and procured locally without any need for import.

CEC assured of support in selling the local produce through cooperative societies; efforts will be made to discourage import of those vegetables which are produced locally during summer season.
