Srinagar, Dec 9: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel has committed suicide here, police said Sunday.
 CRPF constable Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Punjab, was found dead with mysterious fire arm injury on his body in the barracks of his unit at NIIT Hazratbal on the city outskirts Sunday morning. He was attached with the CRPF's 137 battalion.
 Police have initiated inquest proceedings under section 174 CrPC in this regard.

Kundal inaugurates Police Public Mela 
Jammu, Dec 9: Chief Secretary B R Kundal Sunday inaugurated the Day long Police Public Mela at Police Sports Stadium Gulshan Ground here. Organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Police Wives Welfare Association, the Mela was declared open by lighting the traditional lamp by Kundal, Ms Kundal, Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda, Chairperson JKPWWA Dr Indu Khoda, Senior Police Officers and members of welfare association. Large number of people were also present on the occasion.

Azad felicitates people on Losar
Jammu, Dec 9: Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has greeted the people on the occasion of Mela Losar. He said that festivals such as Losar provide an opportunity to people to strengthen the bonds of fellow feeling and love.

3 houses, 8 shops gutted in Shopian
Srinagar, Dec 9: At least three houses and eleven shops were gutted in fire accident at Shopian in south Kashmir on Sunday, police said.
  A police official said the fire broke out from a house and engulfed 11shops and two more houses in no time causing huge damage to the property. " The fire has been controlled."

Man dies in mishap
Kupwara, Dec 9: A man died on Sunday while cutting down a tree in frontier district of Kupwara, official said.
 They said Gulab Khan son of Syed Khan died when he came under a tree he was cutting in compartment no. 33 of a forest in Dorsa, Lolab, Kupwara.
 Khan is survived by 13 children and his wife.

2 houses, 5 shops gutted in fire
Srinagar, Dec 9: In a fire incident, five shops and two houses were gutted at Qazigund market, Kulgam. However no loss of life or injury to anyone was reported in the incident. The cause of fire is being ascertained.

Tank turns turtle, driver dies
Jammu, Dec 9: An army Tank turned turtle, during a training exercise, resulting in the on the spot death of its driver at Vijaypur, about 30 kilometers from here, Saturday evening.
 Sources said that the Tank (T-72) turned turtle during a training exercise at an army training field, Saturday evening. Driver of the Tank, identified as Parkash Dandhe resident of Amravatty, Mahrashtra died on the spot. He was from 49 Armed Regiment, they added.
 Talking to News Agency of Kashmir Defence spokesman Col S D Goswami confirmed the incident and said that the matter was being investigated.

Haveli bye-election, polling on Dec 12
Poonch, Dec 9: Stage is set for Assembly bye-election to the 87-Haveli constituency in Poonch district. The polling is scheduled for December 12 while as counting will take place on December 15, 2007.
As many as 96,461 voters are eligible to exercise their right of voting. Of them 49,551 are male whileas female voters are 46,910.
 As many as 135 polling stations have been set up in the constituency where polling will take place. Of these, 42 stations have been declared sensitive and 28 hypersensitive.
 All adequate arrangements have been finalized to ensure free and fair elections in the constituency.
