A popcorn composite variety of maize, Shalimar Pop Corn1, developed by a team of SKUAST-K scientists has been has been identified for release at national level across maize cultivating zones of India.

The Shalimar Pop Corn1 was selected during 59th annual group meeting of Indian Institute of Maize Research held at University of Agriculture Sciences Bangalore on Monday, a SKUAST-K statement said.

The maize variety, which has average production potential of four tons per hectare with popping percentage of more than 85 percent, has been developed by team of scientists from the disciplines of Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, Entomology and Plant Pathology (Dr Ajaz Ahmad Lone, Dr F A Nehvi, Dr Bashir Ahmad Alie, Dr Z A Dar, Dr M I Makhdoomi, Dr M. A. Ahangar, Dr Shafiq Hakeem, Dr S A Dar and Dr Gul  Zaffar.

The variety, according to the statement, has inbuilt resilience to multiple biotic stresses.
