AirAsia India has become the first ever airline to make in-flight announcements in Kashmiri language.
Passengers on the Delhi-Srinagar-Delhi flights of AirAsia India have been taken by surprise when the announcements made in their flight were played out in Kashmiri. The AirAsia India's gesture has been declared as a welcome step by promoters of Kashmiri language.
Renowned Kashmiri poet Zareef Ahmad Zareef, who has scripted these announcements, says translating them from English to Kashmiri was a "challenging yet exciting task".
"It is a welcome step that Kashmiri is becoming increasingly popular since language is our biggest identity. A HUGE corporate such as AirAsia has felt that in order to give proper recognition to Kashmiri, using it in-flight is a good idea which they have rightly experimented with," Zareef said.
Zareef said in order to script announcements for take-off and arrival he "had to find apt Kashmiri words that were easy to understand yet chaste".
A video of the in-flight Kashmiri announcements posted on social networking site Facebook received almost 74,000 hits in just last two days.
According to an AirAsia India spokeperson, inflight Kashmiri announcements have received an overwhelming response from fliers ever since AirAsia India became operational to Srinagar last month. He said the airline has decided to continue with this new trend.
"It is a female ground operations member of ours whose voice was used for recording the announcements. She practiced it for a long time and we all worked in close association with Zareef sahab to ensure that the initiative is a success. Some technical words related to aviation sector had to be translated which was a demanding task but Zareef sahab did a commendable job," the spokesperson said.
